Deep in the beak winter of 1846, Jersey is a very different place from today. It is home to tens of thousands of rough-and-ready sailors, who spend their time drinking, chasing loose women and gambling through the teeming and chaotic streets. The job of keeping order still falls to elected 'centeniers' - such as the respected and feared George Le Cronier. There have already been two brutal murders on the island over the last few weeks. Now Le Cronier is on his way to arrest the madame of a notorious brothel. This is the true story of what happened next...
The Policeman and the Brothel eBook Theodore Dalrymple
I was originally attracted to this book for two reasons. I had read another of the author's book, "Life at the Bottom" and was impressed by his writing style and politics which are aligned with my own. In addition, this book is set on the Isle of Jersey, from which my original ancestor, George Poingdestre, immigrated to America in 1659 and I was interested to see if any of my relatives were mentioned in the story. Yes, one appeared in the era of the story, 1847, while another appeared in 1813, both only as very peripheral characters. This is what we would call a True Crime story, albeit in Jersey idiom and customs.Product details

The Policeman and the Brothel eBook Theodore Dalrymple Reviews
I wanted to like this book because I love the author. However, it was so dull and boring that I couldn't even finish it. I never did see the point of it really. There was no plot that I could discern; just a day-by-day portrayal of what life was like at the time in that place. Dalryimple is an excellent author, but this book was like reading a textbook.
Gives an interesting account of life at that time and place.
As much as I like his writing, I just could not like this one.
This book is surprisingly tedious. It's not badly written but it displays none of the understated cynical wit of Dalrymple's "Second Opinion," for instance. It is dull, the tone unvarying. Even the court transcript from my local traffic court must be more exciting reading than this book. This surprises me because this author's other books seem to be clever and engaging.
